Charlie Shafter

Charlie Shafter moved to Amarillo from Illinois about 10 years ago and that started his career in the Texas Country Music business. His sister, Erin, and her husband, Cooder Graw frontman Matt Martindale lived in Texas. That set him on his path into live music.

Shafter's 2006 composition, Jesus and James Dean was nominated for awards. One of his signature songs, "Jesus" describes the tension between meaning and the superficial. The song tells a story from the first person of a man who observed the crowd's reaction to seeing Jesus and James Dean walking down the street. "Everybody went for Jimmy, except this Apostle named Paul..."

In West Texas, Shafter formed a talented band named "Charlie Shafter and the Gnomes" and toured heavily. Eventually, the band relocated to Denton where Shafter hails today.

While with the Gnomes, Shafter and band recorded "17th and Chicago", a record with many of his most well-known songs, including the title track, Jesus and James Dean, and the spooky Medicine Man.

Shafter's last album was a collaberation with Texas legend Ray Wylie Hubbard. The record, titled simply "Charlie Shafter." Popular tracks on the record include Actor that Shafter says could be autobiographical. "I'm tired of highways, and cigarette smoke..."

Shafter is a talented musician with a unique sound and perspective in his lyrics. Expect a great show!
